Co-founding Teenage Artists
Lydia Shorman
Artist
Lydia Shorman is a senior at The Dwight School, NYC. Lydia’s passions include biology and dance. Lydia grew up looking at histology slides and marveling at the beauty of our internal world. During her junior year, she decided to try to make this beauty palatable for the public eye. She was invigorated by the response she received from her classmates and her teachers and decided to embark on a lifelong journey of exposing the histological world as magical art.
Daria Filatov
Artist
Daria Filatov is a junior at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, born and raised in New York City. She chairs her school's Best Buddies club, which builds community for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Her work for Art'n'Sci carries a similar instinct — to surface what usually goes unseen. Her artworks are defined by saturated color, unexpected palettes, and a layered depth that pulls viewers into microscopic worlds they are invited to discover. Outside the studio and school, she is passionate about all aspects of biology; fitness, nutrition, and holistic health.
Isabelle Gustave
Artist
Isabelle Leonie Gustave is currently a sophomore at the Chapin School. She has a strong passion for science, especially biology, and is fascinated by the way the human body works. In addition to her love for science, she is also an artist who enjoys drawing and coloring. Before seeing histology slides, she had never really seen examples of the human body preserved in such detail. She became captivated by how these structures could be visualized and interpreted in unique ways. Through art and science, she is able to combine her two passions and reimagine the human body in her own creative style.
Alice Marienko
Artist
Alice Marienko is a junior at Brooklyn Technical High School in NYC. Growing up in the city, a bustling and creative setting, has fueled her passions for art and self-expression. In her multidisciplinary interests between media and the legal field, she finds comfort in art. Art is how she views the world, giving her another dimension to understand her surroundings. In her pieces with Art'n'Sci, she plays with recognizability and color, testing the human feelings art evokes and reinforcing the concept that beauty can come from anywhere. Alice is passionate about building community, and has served as an arts instructor for an underprivileged day camp, contributing to the education of the younger generation in the arts. She has designed multiple lines of themed T-shirts with unique logos, donating revenue to her local animal shelter. Alice is interning under a local judge in order to observe court proceedings and discover the modern meaning of justice.
Edith Freud
Artist
Edith Freud is a ninth-grade student attending the Franklin School, living in Jersey City. She has loved art since she was little, often spending time drawing, painting and experimenting with different styles and colors. Alongside her passion for art, she has developed a strong interest in biology and anatomy, especially in understanding how the human body is structured and functions on a deeper level. Through the Art'n'Sci project, Edith has found a way to bring these interests together. By turning microscopic images of tissues and cells into colorful, expressive artwork, she enjoys transforming something scientific into something visually striking. What she likes most about the project is discovering and sharing the unexpected patterns and beauty in places most people don't see, showing that art and science can connect in meaningful ways.
Zina Wilhelm
Artist
Zina Wilhelm is a sophomore at Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles. Her artistic practice has evolved from graphite and charcoal into richly textured oil-based painting, exploring color, depth, and abstraction. Alongside a growing interest in medicine, Zina approaches histology slides the way an astrophotographer might approach the night sky — as luminous nebulas full of hidden structure. She enhances their contrast and reveals their architectures, finding in the microscopic world the same sense of wonder and discovery she brings to every canvas.
